Portskewett in Monmouthshire, Wales is a small village tucked onto the eastern shore of the Severn Estuary, where the broad tidal flats of the Caldicot Levels meet low cliffs and saltmarsh. The nearby eastern mouth of the Severn Tunnel and the railway junction give the area a faint industrial heritage, while the estuary itself - with its huge tides and rich birdlife - remains the dominant natural feature.
There are visible traces of a long past here, from medieval church sites and the earthworks of Portskewett Castle to its long history as a crossing point to Somerset before modern bridges and tunnels. Today the settlement is largely rural and residential, with agriculture and commuter links to Newport and Bristol shaping the local economy and social life.
