Alway is a residential ward on the eastern edge of Newport, a short distance from the city centre and close to the River Usk and the M4. It is largely made up of post‑war council housing and low‑rise estates interspersed with parks and allotments, giving it a mix of built and green space that marks the suburb as quietly suburban yet still very much part of the city’s outskirts.
The area has strong working‑class roots tied to Newport's industrial past, and today you’ll find a diverse local community, small parades of shops, schools and community projects focused on regeneration and social support. Economically it has faced challenges common to many former industrial towns, but there is a noticeable community spirit and practical local activity - from sports and youth clubs to neighbourhood initiatives - aiming to improve facilities and opportunities for residents.
