Caerleon is a historic riverside community on the banks of the River Usk within the city of Newport in Wales. It sits on the site of the Roman fortress of Isca, and the surviving amphitheatre, baths and the National Roman Legion Museum make the Roman past a very visible part of the town’s character; later medieval features such as St Cadoc’s church and earthwork castle remains add layers of history, while links to Arthurian legend give it a literary mystique.
Today Caerleon combines a compact village centre of independent shops, cafés and schools with a strong tourist economy and an active community calendar that includes Roman re-enactments and local arts events. Its attractive streets, conservation areas and convenient commuting access to Newport and Cardiff mean it is popular with families and visitors who come for both heritage and riverside walks.
