Goldcliff is a small village and community set on the flat, reclaimed expanse of the Caldicot Levels beside the Severn Estuary, a few miles east of Newport. Its low-lying landscape of sea walls, drainage ditches and saltmarsh is shaped by the estuary’s dramatic tides, making the mudflats important for wading birds and occasional seal sightings and offering wide, open skies and coastal walks.
The settlement has a quietly historic and rural character - a medieval church, St Mary’s Church, and the remains of monastic activity hint at a long past, while agriculture and grazing on the levels remain important locally. The nearby Goldcliff Lagoons and other reserves attract birdwatchers and naturalists, and the community retains a strong village feel with footpaths, local events and a small, close-knit population.
