Set in the upland valley country of Powys, Banwy, Llanfihangel and Llanwddyn lie along the River Banwy and close to the reservoir of Lake Vyrnwy. The landscape is a patchwork of rolling hills and sheep pasture, dominated by the Victorian stone dam that created Lake Vyrnwy in the 1880s - the original Llanwddyn was deliberately flooded to form the reservoir, an event that ties local history to the water supply for Liverpool.
Today the settlements are small and distinctly rural, with an economy based on farming and recreation; the lake and surrounding nature reserve attract walkers, birdwatchers and cyclists. There’s a strong community spirit expressed through local events and conservation volunteering, and historic touches such as the parish church at Llanfihangel underline the area’s long Welsh cultural heritage.
