Llanwddyn is a small rural community in Powys, Wales, set at the head of the man-made Lake Vyrnwy. The settlement and surrounding landscape are dominated by the late‑Victorian masonry dam and castellated tower built when the valley was flooded in the 1880s to supply water to Liverpool; the old village was deliberately submerged and much local history revolves around that dramatic reshaping of the parish.
Today Llanwddyn is known for outdoor recreation and conservation - walking, cycling, fishing and birdwatching around the reservoir and reedbeds - alongside traditional sheep farming and forestry. The community is small and socially tight-knit, with tourism and nature conservation important to the local economy and identity, and the impressive dam and Victorian architecture remaining a focal point for visitors and local memory.
