Gwernyfed is a rural ward in south Powys, lying close to the foothills of the Brecon Beacons and marked by rolling farmland, wooded parkland and a scattering of small villages and hamlets. The area takes its name from the historic Gwernyfed Park, a country house and estate whose listed buildings and landscaped grounds are a local landmark.
The local economy is largely agricultural, supplemented by small rural businesses and tourism from walkers and riders drawn to the nearby hills. Community life is focused on village halls, pubs and local schools - including Gwernyfed High School - and the ward reflects the distinctive borderland mix of Welsh and English cultural influences alongside the familiar challenges and strengths of dispersed rural communities.
