Machynlleth in Powys, Wales is a compact market town set beside the River Dyfi on the Dyfi estuary, at the western edge of Snowdonia and the Cambrian hills. Its historic square, railway link and narrow streets make it a useful base for exploring the estuary and surrounding uplands, with a mix of independent shops, cafes and seasonal visitors.
The town is famous for hosting Owain Glyndŵr’s parliament in 1404 and often styles itself the ancient capital of Wales; culturally it also welcomes the annual Machynlleth Festival and has a notable alternative-technology and renewable-energy presence thanks to the nearby Centre for Alternative Technology. The local economy blends tourism, farming and small creative or green businesses, and a lively Welsh-speaking community remains an important part of town life.
