Montgomery is a compact market town in Powys, Wales, sitting on a hill in the Welsh Marches with the crumbling keep of Montgomery Castle looking out over the fertile Vale and the nearby River Severn. Its street plan and cobbled square reflect a medieval foundation and there are many timber‑framed and Georgian buildings that give the place a distinct historic feel; the town also lent its name to the historic county of Montgomeryshire.
Today Montgomery has a small, community‑oriented economy based on agriculture, niche tourism and independent shops, with regular markets and local festivals that celebrate crafts and food. It’s popular for walking and cycling - the surrounding rolling countryside and long‑distance routes through the Marches make it a quiet base for exploring the borderlands and rural heritage.
