Pen-y-waun is a small parish in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, its name meaning "top of the moor" in Welsh. Set on upland moorland above the valley floor, it offers open countryside, walking routes and fair views over the South Wales Valleys towards the Brecon Beacons, retaining a quieter, more rural feel than the denser valley towns below.
Like much of the borough, the area combines a history of agriculture with connections to the coalfield era, and local life still revolves around chapels, community halls and voluntary groups. The contemporary economy is mixed - small local businesses and farming alongside residents who commute to nearby towns and cities - and there remains a strong sense of local identity and Welsh cultural activity.
