Rhondda Cynon Taf sits in the heart of the South Wales Valleys in Wales, a patchwork of steep-sided valleys cut by the rivers Rhondda, Cynon and the Taf. It contains a mix of former mining towns and newer suburbs, with principal centres such as Pontypridd and Aberdare and valley communities like Treorchy, and serves as both a cultural heartland and a commuter area for nearby Cardiff.
The area’s identity is shaped by its 19th- and 20th-century coal‑mining history, visible in memorials, reclaimed sites and strong local traditions such as male voice choirs, brass bands and community festivals. Since the decline of heavy industry the county borough has focused on economic diversification, regeneration and outdoor recreation around upland moors and reservoirs, while retaining a resilient community spirit and pockets of Welsh language and cultural life.
