Mountain Ash is a small town in the heart of Rhondda Cynon Taf in south Wales, set in the wooded Cynon Valley on either side of the River Cynon. It grew rapidly in the 19th century with the coal and iron industries and still shows that industrial heritage in its terraces, former pits and railway lines, though the landscape now also offers easy access to surrounding hills and valley trails.
Today the town has a strong local community spirit typical of the Valleys, with grassroots sport, music and civic projects prominent, and a local economy that combines small-scale retail and light industry with many residents commuting to larger centres. Regeneration efforts in recent years have focused on improving public spaces and preserving historic character while promoting outdoor recreation and local culture.
