Mountain Ash West sits on the western side of the old mining town in the Cynon Valley, within Rhondda Cynon Taf in south Wales. The community is set along the valley by the River Cynon, with easy access to surrounding uplands and countryside and within reasonable commuting distance of Cardiff, which gives it a mix of valley charm and commuter practicality.
Like much of the area it was shaped by the coal industry and the social institutions that grew around it, and today the economy is largely residential with local shops, services and ongoing regeneration projects. Community life remains lively, with active clubs, voluntary groups and a strong sense of local identity centred on sporting clubs, community halls and efforts to preserve the valley’s industrial heritage.
