Merthyr Vale is a small former coal‑mining village on the southern bank of the River Taff within the borough of Merthyr Tydfil, tucked into the South Wales Valleys with hills and views that lead up towards the Brecon Beacons. It has a local railway stop on the valley line, giving straightforward links into Cardiff and the surrounding towns, and sits close to Aberfan, so the industrial landscape and its legacy are very much part of the setting.
Built around the now‑closed Merthyr Vale Colliery, the village retains the terraced housing, miners’ traditions and community institutions typical of valley settlements. The loss of deep coalworking brought economic challenges and regeneration efforts, and today the area mixes strong local ties, memorial and industrial heritage, basic amenities and access to valley walking routes with many residents commuting further afield for work.
