Shafton is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, in South Yorkshire, England. It lies a short distance east of Barnsley town centre and combines semi‑rural lanes and green spaces with clusters of post‑war and newer housing; the parish includes the settlement known as Shafton Two Gates.
Historically the area moved from agriculture into a coal‑mining community in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the legacy of that industrial past still shapes local identity, though many residents now commute to nearby towns and regional centres. Community life centres on a village hall, clubs and public footpaths, and the "Two Gates" name recalls the old turnpike/toll gates that once stood on historic routes through the area.
