Royston is an electoral ward within the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. It occupies the northern outskirts of Barnsley with a semi-rural feel, edging towards the foothills of the Pennines, and combines older red‑brick housing and former pit communities with patches of open countryside.
The area bears the imprint of former heavy industry and mining but today has a mixed local economy of small businesses, services and many residents who commute to nearby centres; there are good road links into Barnsley and on towards Sheffield and Leeds. Community life is centred on neighbourhood clubs, schools and sports teams, giving the ward a strong local identity amid gradual residential change and regeneration efforts.
