Hoyland is a small town in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, in South Yorkshire, England, sitting on the edge of the Dearne Valley a few miles south of Barnsley town centre and within easy reach of Sheffield and Leeds. Its position gives a mix of suburban streets and nearby countryside, with good road links for commuters and local walking routes into the surrounding hills.
Historically the town grew with the coal-mining and heavy-industrial economy of the area and retains a strong working-class heritage, reflected in rows of Victorian terraces, community clubs and local pubs. Since the decline of mining it has become more residential and mixed-use, with small businesses and light industry alongside active community groups and green spaces, and easy access to the wider region via the M1 motorway.
