Great Barford is a village and civil parish on the banks of the River Great Ouse, roughly five miles east of Bedford. It is best known for its attractive medieval stone bridge, a listed and scheduled structure that lends a strong riverside character; the surrounding floodplain and winding river attract walkers, anglers and plenty of wildlife.
While it retains a distinctly rural feel with historic buildings and village green, Great Barford also functions as a commuter community for Bedford and beyond, with good road links via the A421. The village has an active community life centred on its church, primary school, pubs and local clubs, and nearby earthworks and historic houses hint at a much older settlement history.
