Sandy is a small market town in Central Bedfordshire, Bedfordshire, sitting beside the River Ivel where sandy soils and the old coaching route shaped its character. The town grew significantly with the arrival of the railway in the 19th century and still has a historic high street and former coaching inns from the era of the Great North Road.
It’s notable for its proximity to the RSPB reserve at The Lodge and for being a handy commuter point on the East Coast Main Line, with easy access to London and Cambridge; locally the economy mixes agriculture, light industry and services, and community life centres on markets, pubs and outdoor activities.
