Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole

Unitary authority in England

Coordinates:50.74, -1.86
OS grid ref:SZ 10 93

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole is a coastal unitary authority in England formed in 2019 by bringing together the Victorian resort of Bournemouth, the historic riverside town of Christchurch and the longstanding port of Poole.

Geographically it stretches from long sandy beaches and low cliffs to the sheltered waters of Poole Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in Europe, and sits within ceremonial Dorset with the Jurassic Coast nearby. The local economy leans heavily on tourism and maritime activity but also includes growing creative and digital sectors and higher education around Bournemouth.

Culturally there are summer festivals, theatres and an active arts scene in parts of Bournemouth, alongside quieter historic streets and churches in Christchurch and working quays, marinas and waterfront regeneration in Poole. Seasonal visitor peaks, a mix of demographics and ongoing development projects make the area both lively and subject to the usual coastal pressures on housing and services.
