South Cambridgeshire wraps around the city of Cambridge, combining a largely rural landscape of arable fields, fen-edge pasture and rolling chalk hills with dozens of villages and small towns such as Cambourne, Sawston and Linton. Many residents commute into Cambridge, so the district blends traditional village life with suburban growth and new housing developments.
Economically it is shaped by the nearby university and research cluster known as Silicon Fen, so you’ll find high-tech firms and science parks alongside long-established farming; agriculture remains important, but there are also high-skilled jobs in biotech, IT and clean tech. Good road and rail links into Cambridge and London make it attractive to professionals, while ongoing development pressures have changed parts of the countryside.
Historically the area contains medieval churches, thatched cottages and archaeological sites, and the landscapes open onto the low-lying The Fens and the meandering River Cam, offering plenty of walking and cycling. Strong parish communities, active village halls and farmers’ markets give a lively local culture, and there is a continuing tension between conserving rural character and accommodating growth driven by the success of nearby Cambridge.
