Waterbeach is a fen-edge village just north of Cambridge in South Cambridgeshire, Cambridgeshire, England. It sits alongside the River Cam and the low-lying fen landscape, with gravel-extraction lakes and drainage channels that are now used for leisure as well as agriculture. The village has good rail and road links into Cambridge, so many residents commute to the city while the local economy still includes farming, small businesses and recreational activities around the lakes.
Historically Waterbeach was notable for RAF Waterbeach and the later Waterbeach Barracks, military sites that shaped the village for much of the 20th century and whose closure has led to major redevelopment proposals for new housing and community facilities. The place retains a strong local community with village halls, pubs, a primary school and annual events, blending its fenland heritage with the pressures and opportunities of nearby Cambridge’s tech and education economy.
