Billy Row is a small village in County Durham in North East England, lying a short distance from the market towns of Crook and Bishop Auckland. It grew up as part of the Durham coalfield and its 19th- and early-20th-century housing and community life were shaped by mining and related industries.
Today Billy Row is a quiet, largely residential community set against the region’s rolling farmland and moorland, with traces of its industrial past still visible in local architecture and memorials. Like many former pit villages it combines a strong local identity and community activity with commuting to nearby towns for work, and retains a modest mix of shops, a village hall and sporting or social clubs that reflect its continuing social ties.
