Esh Winning is a small former mining village in County Durham, a few miles west of Durham. The settlement grew up in the late 19th century around local coal workings - the “Winning” in the name refers to coal winning - and many stone terraced houses and community buildings still reflect that industrial past; the first element, Esh, comes from an Old English word for the ash tree.
Today Esh Winning is largely residential with a strong local community, green spaces and easy access to walks along the Deerness Valley and other converted colliery land.
