Esh Winning is a small former mining village in County Durham, a few miles west of Durham. The settlement grew up in the late 19th century around local coal workings - the “Winning” in the name refers to coal winning - and many stone terraced houses and community buildings still reflect that industrial past; the first element, Esh, comes from an Old English word for the ash tree.
Today Esh Winning is largely residential with a strong local community, green spaces and easy access to walks along the Deerness Valley and other converted colliery land. Many residents commute to nearby centres such as Durham or Newcastle, while village life still centres on local clubs, pubs and occasional heritage events that remember its mining roots.
