Brancepeth is a small village and civil parish set on a wooded rise above the Browney valley, a few miles west of Durham in County Durham. Stone-built cottages, a village green and surrounding farmland give it a distinctly rural feel, while footpaths and parkland around the village and Brancepeth Castle make it popular with walkers and visitors.
Historically the community grew from agriculture and was touched by the nearby coalfield developments of the 19th and 20th centuries; today it is largely residential with a close-knit village life, local events and conservation interest. The castle, with medieval origins and later Victorian remodelling, dominates the local skyline and remains central to the parish's historic identity.
