Bowburn is a former pit village in County Durham a few miles to the south of Durham, which grew up around coal-mining in the early 20th century. The old colliery has long gone, but its impact is still visible in the village layout and local memory; the former pit site is now largely given over to an industrial estate and light industry, reflecting a shift in the local economy after mining declined.
Today Bowburn combines basic local amenities - shops, a primary school and sports clubs - with easy road links to larger employment centres via the A1(M), making it a practical commuter settlement while retaining a strong community identity and visible traces of its industrial past.
