Kelloe is a small village and civil parish in County Durham in north‑east England, set among gently rolling farmland and small woodlands. It sits within the sphere of the old Durham coalfield and is within easy travelling distance of the city of Durham and the east coast, so many people commute to larger towns while enjoying a rural village setting.
Historically Kelloe grew up as a mining community and its shape and culture were long influenced by the pits, terraced housing and strong local clubs and traditions. Since the colliery closures in the late 20th century the local economy has diversified into commuting, small businesses and light industry, and local history and community projects help preserve the village’s mining heritage while the social life remains centred on community institutions and events.
