Chilton is a small former mining town in County Durham, in the north-east of England, lying between Ferryhill and Spennymoor and within easy reach of Bishop Auckland and the city of Durham. It sits on the former Durham coalfield amid rolling farmland and low plateaux, which helped shape its settlement pattern and local landscape.
Historically the town grew up around coal workings, and although the pits closed in the twentieth century the mining heritage still shapes local identity through memorials, street names and community memory. Today Chilton is largely residential with pockets of light industry and small businesses; local life centres on schools, social clubs and grassroots sport, and many residents commute to larger employment centres nearby while community-led regeneration has sought to preserve its heritage.
