Cockfield in County Durham is a small upland village on the western edge of the old Durham coalfield, a compact settlement set among rolling farmland and moorland a few miles west of Bishop Auckland and on the fringe of the Durham Dales. The nearby common of Cockfield Fell gives expansive walking country and open views, with the landscape still showing patterns of medieval field systems and scars from historic mining activity.
Historically shaped by lead and coal extraction, the village retains a rural, community feel with a village hall, pub and farming at its heart, while many residents now commute to larger towns. Cockfield draws interest from walkers and anyone curious about industrial archaeology and the quieter, more pastoral side of County Durham.
