Toft Hill and High Etherley are small neighbouring villages on high ground in County Durham, a few miles west of Bishop Auckland. Perched above the Gaunless and Wear valleys, they offer broad views over the surrounding dales and fields and sit within the former Durham coalfield, so the landscape mixes open agricultural land with remnants of industrial heritage.
Both communities retain a strong village feel with churches, a village hall and local clubs, and their history is shaped by 19th‑ and 20th‑century mining and rural farming. Today they are largely residential – popular with commuters to nearby towns – and used as bases for walking, cycling and exploring the quieter parts of County Durham, while local social life remains centred on community events and longstanding village institutions.
