Evenwood is a small village in County Durham, sitting in the former Wear Valley close to the market town of Bishop Auckland and on the edge of the rolling countryside that leads towards the North Pennines. Its setting gives easy access to rural walks and neighbouring towns while retaining the character of a compact former industrial village.
Historically Evenwood grew in the 19th century with coal and associated industries, and like many Durham villages it was shaped by mining and the terraces built for workers; the closure of pits in the 20th century brought economic change and a shift towards a more residential community. Today the village is notable for its strong local community, typical miners’ housing and social clubs, and its close links to nearby towns and countryside amenities.
