Etherley is a civil parish in County Durham, a few miles west of Bishop Auckland, set amid gently rolling countryside typical of south‑west Durham. The area is largely rural, with a scattering of stone-built villages and farms, and offers easy access to the Durham countryside while being close to the amenities and historic sites of the market town nearby.
Historically the community grew around agriculture and the coal and iron industries that shaped much of County Durham in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and remnants of that industrial past sit alongside more modern housing and small businesses. Today Etherley maintains a strong local identity with village halls, churches and community groups, and many residents commute to neighbouring towns while the parish itself remains valued for its landscape and local events.
