West Auckland is a small former mining village in the Wear valley of County Durham, England, sitting a short distance west of the market town of Bishop Auckland and close to the River Wear. It grew up around 19th-century coal and ironstone workings and still shows that industrial heritage in its layout and buildings, though the pits have long since closed and the surrounding landscape has returned to a mix of farmland and reclaimed industrial land.
The village is best known for its proud community spirit and for West Auckland Town Football Club, celebrated for winning the early 20th-century Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy and remembered locally as a kind of "first world cup" story; that miners’ sporting legacy and local community groups remain important. Today the local economy is a mix of small businesses, commuting to nearby towns, and activities linked to rural tourism and heritage, with regular community events keeping social life active.
