Great Lumley is a small former mining village and civil parish in County Durham, sitting just to the north of Chester-le-Street and within easy reach of Durham. The setting is low-lying and semi-rural, with field edges, local footpaths and good road links to the A1(M), so it often feels like a quiet residential outcrop on the edge of larger market and cathedral-town amenities.
Historically the community was shaped by coal mining, and that industrial past still colours local identity through surviving buildings, street patterns and community memory. Today it is largely residential with local shops and clubs, small businesses and residents who commute to nearby centres; the nearby historic landmark of Lumley Castle is a reminder of the area’s longer history and attracts occasional visitors without changing the village’s modest, close-knit character.
