Houghton is an electoral ward on the western edge of the City of Sunderland, centred on the historic market town of Houghton-le-Spring. It sits in a semi-rural setting on the fringes of the Wear valley with greenbelt and residential suburbs that give it a mix of village character and commuter convenience, with good road and rail links into Sunderland, Durham and Newcastle.
Historically a coal-mining area, the ward still carries that industrial heritage in its landscape and community memory, but has diversified into local services, small businesses and commuter employment. Culturally it is best known for the long-running, centuries-old Houghton Feast and the parish church at the town centre, and socially it combines active community groups, schools and preserved historic streets with newer housing developments.
