Leadgate is a village in County Durham, England, lying just to the east of Consett in the Derwent Valley. Historically it developed as part of the Durham coalfield and as a settlement linked to the iron and steel industries centred on nearby Consett, so the closure of the pits and the steelworks in the late 20th century had a profound effect on the local economy and built environment.
Today Leadgate retains a strong local identity with community halls, shops, pubs and stretches of green space, and many residents commute to Durham or Newcastle. It combines reminders of its industrial past with a quieter suburban–rural character, good walking access into the surrounding countryside and the western approaches to the Pennines, and ongoing local regeneration and grassroots community activity.
