Dipton is a small former mining village in County Durham, set on the western edge of the old Durham coalfield and at the foothills of the Pennines. It sits a few miles from the former industrial towns of Stanley and Consett and is within commuting distance of Newcastle, giving it a mix of rural outlook and easy access to larger urban centres.
Historically the village grew up around coal and related industries, and that mining heritage still shapes local identity even after the pit closures; terraces, memorials and community groups recall that past. Today Dipton is largely residential with local shops and facilities, popular with walkers and families wanting countryside access while remaining connected to jobs and services in the North East.
