Consett North sits on the western edge of County Durham, covering the northern reaches of Consett. The ward occupies the fringe of the town and gives relatively easy access to the River Derwent, the Derwent Walk Country Park and the rolling hills of the North Pennines, so countryside and walking routes are a noticeable part of local life.
Its character is shaped by the heavy industrial past of Consett – the steelworks that once dominated the local economy left a strong historic identity and, after their closure in the 1980s, prompted years of regeneration.
