Newfield is a small village in County Durham, England, set amid the rolling valleys that characterise the Durham coalfield. Like many settlements in the area it grew in the 19th century with coal mining, and remnants of that industrial past - terraced housing, former pit sites and community buildings - still shape the village’s layout and character.
Since the decline of mining the local economy has become more mixed, with many residents commuting to nearby towns while community groups and occasional heritage projects keep local history alive. There’s a strong village identity centred on the hall, pub and green spaces, and easy access to surrounding countryside means walking and local events remain important to social life.
