Pelton is a ward and village in County Durham, sitting just west of Chester-le-Street on the edge of the former Durham coalfield. Its semi-rural setting gives easy access to surrounding countryside and the Tyne Valley, while being within commuting distance of both Durham and Newcastle; many residents use the nearby Chester-le-Street station and local roads for work and leisure travel.
Built around coal mining, Pelton still shows that industrial heritage in its terraces and community layout, and retains a strong local identity with village halls, pubs and clubs. Since the closure of the pits the economy has shifted towards services and commuting, though small shops, light industry and active community groups keep the ward socially engaged.
