Sacriston is an electoral ward in County Durham, sitting a few miles to the north of Durham and within comfortable commuting distance of Newcastle. It occupies a patchwork of former mining village, residential streets and surrounding farmland, with pockets of recreational green space and the sort of low, rolling countryside typical of the Durham coalfield edge.
Historically the area grew up around coal working and its name reflects ecclesiastical ownership - derived from the sacristan whose lands were once tied to Durham Cathedral - and the industrial past still shapes local identity. Since pit closures the ward has seen modest regeneration, a mix of older terraces and newer housing, local shops, community groups, sports clubs and conservation efforts that celebrate both the mining heritage and the natural landscape.
