Spennymoor is an electoral ward and former mining town in County Durham, lying on the old Durham coalfield between Durham and Bishop Auckland. Its setting on higher ground gives views across reclaimed colliery land and rolling moorland, and the urban landscape still shows the legacy of 19th‑century terraced streets and Victorian civic buildings.
Historically shaped by coal and heavy industry, the community has strong working‑class roots and a lively local culture - from grassroots football to amateur dramatics and community arts - and has been the focus of regeneration, with former industrial sites turned into parks, light industrial estates and retail areas. Many residents now commute to nearby employment centres while local projects keep a distinct sense of place and social cohesion.
