The small civil parish sits in rural County Durham, a few miles west of Barnard Castle amidst the rolling farmland and moorland of upper Teesdale. It comprises the dispersed hamlets of Streatlam and Stainton, with stone cottages, drystone walls and a landscape dominated by grazing and arable fields overlooking the River Tees.
Historically the area was shaped by large landed estates - Streatlam Park was long the Durham seat of the Bowes-Lyon family until much of the house and grounds were removed in the mid 20th century - and farming still underpins the local economy, alongside some commuting to nearby towns and modest countryside tourism. With a small, close-knit population community life tends to revolve around farming rhythms, village events and amenities in Barnard Castle.
