Startforth is a small village on the south bank of the River Tees in County Durham, England, lying just downstream from Barnard Castle. It occupies the edge of Teesdale, with riverside views and accessible walking and fishing, and the landscape of limestone scars and pastures gives the place a distinctly rural, scenic character.
Historically the village was in the North Riding of Yorkshire until the 1974 local government reorganisation, so there’s still a felt borderland identity. The local economy is largely agricultural with some residents commuting to nearby towns, while the village’s old bridge, proximity to Barnard Castle and the appeal of Teesdale bring occasional visitors and a quietly active community life.
