The parish of Cleator Moor sits on a raised tract of former moorland in west Cumberland, a few miles inland from the coast and on the fringes of the Lake District. The town expanded rapidly in the 19th century with iron‑ore and coal mining and the arrival of branch railways, and that industrial past is still visible in Victorian terraces, former chapels and scattered industrial archaeology across the landscape.
After the mines closed in the 20th century the area suffered decline but has a resilient community spirit, with local clubs, shops and volunteer groups active in regeneration and heritage projects. Its position makes it handy for fell and coastal walks, and the mix of industrial heritage and rural surroundings gives the parish a distinctive character within west Cumberland.
