Crosscanonby is a small village and civil parish in Cumberland, perched on the low-lying Solway Plain close to the Solway Firth a few miles north of Maryport and near the western terminus of Hadrian's Wall. The parish is characterised by salt marshes, dunes and coastal farmland, making it important for wading birds and coastal habitats and subject to the ebb and flow of sea‑defence and erosion issues.
Historically the name hints at ecclesiastical links and there is a medieval parish church at the heart of the settlement; otherwise the area has long been agricultural. Today it remains a quiet rural community with farms, some commuters to nearby towns such as Workington, and attracts birdwatchers and walkers exploring the Solway coast and nearby Roman and medieval sites.
