Maryport South is the southern part of the coastal town of Maryport in the unitary authority of Cumberland, sitting on the western edge of the Solway Firth. The ward includes the harbour and seafront area and reflects the town’s strong maritime and Roman connections - the nearby Senhouse Roman Museum preserves altars and funerary stones from the Roman fort that once guarded the estuary. The streets show a nineteenth‑century industrial legacy of shipbuilding and coal export alongside Victorian terraces and the harbour’s working waterfront.
Today the area is largely residential with a mixed local economy: traditional fishing and small port activity sit alongside tourism, heritage attractions and community regeneration projects. The seafront and coastal walks attract birdwatchers and visitors, while local festivals and museums help keep a sense of community and history alive amid the social and economic challenges left by deindustrialisation.
