Lowca is a small coastal village in the historic county of Cumberland on the north-west English coast, perched on cliffs above the Irish Sea a few miles north of Whitehaven. Its position gives sweeping views over the coastline and nearby headlands, and the surrounding landscape is a mix of rugged shoreline, reclaimed industrial land and pockets of rural farmland that make it popular with walkers and birdwatchers exploring the west Cumbrian coast.
Historically Lowca was an industrial hamlet centred on coal mining, ironworking and associated engineering, with its own industrial works and narrow-gauge rail links serving operations in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Much of that heavy industry has gone, leaving a small, close-knit community that now combines local services with commuting to larger towns, modest tourism and a sense of local pride in its industrial heritage and coastal setting.
