Egremont is a compact market town and civil parish in historic Cumberland, sitting where the rolling coastal plain meets the western fringes of the Lake District. It occupies a valley location by the River Ehen, with easy access to coastal towns such as Whitehaven and to countryside popular for walking and cycling.
The town is dominated by the ruined motte of Egremont Castle and is best known for its long‑running Crab Fair, a medieval charter fair that still features the famous gurning competitions. Historically the local economy leaned on mining and heavy industry, and in more recent decades the nearby nuclear and energy complex at Sellafield has been a major employer; the community retains a strong sense of local tradition and civic pride despite economic change.
