Millom Without is a largely rural ward surrounding the small town of Millom on the southern fringe of Cumberland. The area combines low farmland and moorland with a short stretch of coast and sits close to the Lake District boundary and the mouth of the Duddon Estuary, so it’s valued for open skies, coastal scenery and rich birdlife.
Historically the locality was shaped by 19th‑ and 20th‑century iron mining and associated industry, reminders of which survive alongside nature reserves such as the former Hodbarrow workings. Today the economy mixes agriculture, local services and tourism, with small communities that prize local networks but face the familiar challenges of rural transport and amenities; the area is linked to the wider coast by the Cumbrian Coast Line.
